The Right Way to Wash Your Hands

How to Wash Hands
Germs hide in many places.

After watching these videos, I learned that germs are hiding in many areas of your hands. It is not just about singing a song or counting 20 seconds. There are critical areas to clean that I was missing. 

It is my hope that you will share this with everyone you know. The more people who properly wash their hands, the less chance we have of exposure to unwanted viruses, diseases, bacteria, etc.

So get to a sink, grab some soap and see if you find some areas of your hands which need attention.

Here are written instructions:

I encourage you to watch both videos as they are short and very informative.

  1. Get your hands wet.
  2. Apply soap.
  3. Lather soap between palms by rubbing palms together.
  4. Alternate rubbing the palm of one hand over and on the back of the other hand. (be sure to separate your fingers so that the fingers of the top hand get between the fingers of the bottom hand).
  5. To clean the surfaces of the backs of the fingers, interlock hands placing bent fingers in fist of opposite hands.
  6. Alternate between hands with each hand taking turns being the top hand. Remember to clean thumbs.
  7. Grab thumb of one hand in fist of opposite hand. Rotate fist around the thumb and then repeat for opposite hand.
  8. Remember the fingertips. Germs hide in around the nail plate.
  9. Use circular motion with fingertips on opposite palm of each hand. Pull back finger tip from nail of each individual finger with thumb / other finger of that hand. Remember the wrists.
  10. Grab wrist with opposite hand. Rotate wrist while holding in opposite hand. Rinse with CLEAN water.
  11. Any water temperature which feels comfortable for you is acceptable. You may wish to use a towel to operate the faucet or door handles (especially in public areas)

Running errands, commuting, traveling, visiting can all create excuses for grabbing something.

What to do? I never leave home without a something to eat like Granola or Crunchy, Roasted Chickpeas .  If I don’t have a snack I  Find a Restaurant – Eat Vegan, No Oil Food.

Remember, you can always bring a carrots, a piece of fruit like an apple or banana. I also love to bring a baked potato in a ziplock bag which can be eaten warm or cold. I batch cook potatoes so I have plant on hand. If I am in a hurry, I use this to speed up the microwave cooking and grab the bag to take along.

The holidays can be such a challenging time for some who want to follow this lifestyle. We are surrounded by family members and friends, traditions, comfort foods and memories connected to highly palatable foods.

When I began this lifestyle in 2012, I made the  decision to not look back, but to look forward. This is a lifestyle, and if I intend to continue on with this throughout the years, I will have to get through many more Halloweens, Thanksgivings, Birthdays, parties, vacations, and more.

For some it is to have a plan as to  what to do to get through each of these social gatherings. These tips can be helpful every day and especially during the holidays:

Blackberries, Blueberries & Raspberries – Keep Them Fresher, Longer

Will mold quickly especially when moist.

Remove any soft berries at the store. Store in the original plastic container.

Do not rinse or wash them until you are ready to use them.

Frozen berries are frozen shortly after being freshly picked and are a great way to have perfect berries on hand.

Keep Fresh Produce From Spoiling

Vegetable Characters

Once you have unpacked your produce and it is dry and separated, follow this guide below:

Vegetables:

Greens:   Lettuce and Greens should be wrapped in paper towels and place in one of the eco green bags or a zip lock bag.  Remove as much air as possible and place the wrapped greens in your vegetable drawer. Another way to keep it fresh is to use these produce bags.

If your greens wilt, submerge them in ice water for 30-45 minutes and they will be back to crispy!

Broccoli :  Wrap loosely with a damp paper towel and store in the Veggie drawer.  You may have to dampen the paper towel if you don’t consume within a few days.

Carrots:  If they have greens attached, immediately remove green tops and save them if you plan to use for later.  Store the carrots in a covered container (glass is preferred) filled with water.

Cauliflower:  Place it in a plastic bag and store in the Vegetable drawer.

Corn:  Technically corn should be eaten within a day or two of receiving it.  If you are going to store it, make sure you store it in a plastic bag that is sealed.

Cucumbers:  Cucumbers are sensitive to temperatures below 50 degrees F so technically they should be stored on the counter FAR AWAY from any bananas, tomatoes or melons.   If you do store them in the refrigerator store them towards the front of the shelf and off the bottom shelf  in the warmest area of your refrigerator.

Eggplant:  Do not refrigerate.  Keep it in a cool spot away from direct sunlight and use it as soon as possible after buying.  Do not seal it in a plastic bag.

Mushrooms:  Keep them unopened in their original packaging.  If you buy in bulk, keep them in a brown paper bag in the vegetable drawer.

Onions:  Store them at room temperature far away from potatoes and any fruit.

Potatoes:  Potatoes do best in a dark environment at about 45-50 degree F.  In warmer locations, that climate simply doesn’t exist. Room temperature in the summer is typically around 75 degrees.  If you are using them up quickly store them in a dry dark place that is cool but AWAY from any onions or fruit (except apples which can help keep them from sprouting sooner).  You can store them in the refrigerator on one of the warmer spots but make sure they are dry.  If they are wet when you receive them, let them dry out for a day before storing them

Winter Squash like Butternut and Acorn:  Store in cool dry place with low humidity.  Make sure you always have a stem on the squash if you are planning to store for long periods.  Stemless squash should be eaten immediately.

The “E” word just hangs in the air…

If you haven’t gotten to the lucky place where you are addicted to it, exercise can be something you dread.

Limitations:

Whether physical  or mental, limitations can feed the excuse monster.

If you are physically unable to stand, you can do something in a chair. Use small hand weights, soup cans or water bottles to do curls, etc. Can you do 5 curls today?

If you can’t use your arms, do leg lifts while seated. Can you do 5 leg lifts today?

If you can’t walk long distances, buy a cheap pedometer and add one step each day.

What is one simple move you can do one of today that perhaps you can do two of tomorrow and three the next day?

Who is Your Best Friend?

Most people would answer with a name of a relative or friend. Many of us are fortunate to have at least one person around us who cares about us and for whom we can depend upon for support.

My definition of a best friend is one who is there for you whenever you call upon them; a person who will give you their honest opinion (even when you don’t ask for one), wants you to be happy, to do well and yes, someone who is there for your 24/7 and  would even risk their life to save you! Wait, who do you know that would fit this description? Well guess what, you do know someone exactly like this. It is someone you have known all of your life, you!

If you think about it, you are your best friend. You are the only one in the world who can make your life better. You are available 24/7. You can even get inside of your own head and monitor your every thought and decision.

So, now that you know you have been living with your best friend for your entire life, what changes can you make to improve this friendship?

Self talk – Think about the things you, your best friend, says to you through out the day. If any negative self talk comes about, try to correct each occurrence with a positive statement. Say it out loud, as voices that are actually heard by our ears (even our own voices) are more believable to our brains than our thoughts.

Influence – You have great influence over the things you do to yourself each day. As your best friend, try to help yourself make the better decisions about things like what you eat and how much exercise you get.

So work at being a better, best friend to yourself. After all, you make an effort with your other friendships. You may even have friends with whom you get frustrated because they are making poor decisions.

The friendship with yourself is the most important friendship, because a better you is a better example for, and a better friend to others.

When my daughter created this space for me to blog, I was full of uncertainty. I knew there was so much I wanted to say but I was unsure of how to make it interesting to readers.

We spoke this morning about my commitment to daily exercise and eating healthy foods. These are things I do each day, they have become habits.

So today, I will attempt to write something each day.

What habits will you create? Do a little of something each day and before you know it, you will have created a habit which will enable you to move towards achieving your goals.

They say that Rome wasn’t built in a day, but every day they laid down more bricks.

Tip: Easily cut about 400 calories per day

Don’t eat food cooked with oil.

All oil, even olive oil and coconut oil are about 150 calories per tablespoon.

Eat food sautéed in oil and you could be consuming 400 extra, tasteless calories.

Learn how to easily cook vegetables without oil.

Instead of oil, sauté in vegetable broth, citrus juice or water.

You won’t miss the “taste”. Sorry, but if you are eating in a restaurant, your food most likely has been prepared with oil and / or prepped with things like Italian Dressing which is made with oil.

Isolated plant oils are a cheap, unhealthy version of real food. Don’t buy the propaganda about olive oil, coconut oil or any oil. According to Dr. Fuhrman, “When fats are ingested in the form of extracted oils, they are rapidly and efficiently absorbed by the body and immediately converted into body fat. If these fats were instead ingested from whole foods, such as seeds, nuts and avocado, their absorption would be much slower, over hours, not minutes and these fats would be mostly burned for our energy needs and not stored.”

Olive oil is not a whole food—it is a fattening, low-nutrient, processed food, consisting of 100% fat. Unrefined plant foods, rather than olive oil, provided the bulk of the omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, phytochemicals and minerals “

Avocado, Garden, Need to know, Tips, Tricks and Hacks

How To Keep Fresh: Avocados

Ripen on the counter (or in a paper bag* if you want to speed up the process).

Be sure to check avocados often, as they can go from unripe, to perfectly ripe, to soft and moldy before you know it.

As soon as they yield to gentle pressure, you can move them into the refrigerator, where they should last for a few more days.

Depending on how you plan to use them, if you mash them with some lemon or lime juice, the mixture can be frozen for later when making guacamole or dip.
