Greenings Green Warrior! Having a little extra fat might seem harmless, but it can quietly damage your health. Dr. Joel Fuhrman, author of Eat For Life, teaches that fat is not just sitting there. It actually sends out harmful signals that can make you sick. When you have too much fat on your body, it can cause inflammation. It can make your immune system weaker. It also raises your risk for heart disease, diabetes, and even some cancers. The fat deep inside your belly, called visceral fat, is especially dangerous. It surrounds important organs like your liver. It can mess up your cholesterol and blood sugar levels. Someone may look thin on the outside. However, they can still have too much hidden fat on the inside.
Fat on the body is not simply stored energyโit is a living tissue that can cause real harm. Dr. Joel Fuhrman warns that excess body fat is powerfully deadly. It drives inflammation, disrupts normal metabolism, and weakens the immune system. He explains that the ideal body fat for men is below 15 percent and for women under 25 percent. As those numbers rise, disease risk climbs rapidly. There is no such thing as a healthy overweight person. Even a small amount of extra fat can create chronic inflammation. It can also slow immune response. According to Dr. Fuhrman, 89% of Americans are overweight because normal people become overweight eating obesity causing American food. ย Those with normal weight are mostly smokers and sick people as only 2.4% of Americans have a BMI below 23 due to diet and exercise. ย

Visceral fatโthe fat that wraps around your internal organsโis especially dangerous. Because it sits next to the liver, it disrupts cholesterol balance and blood sugar control. This type of fat constantly releases pro-inflammatory molecules that damage blood vessels and interfere with your bodyโs normal functions. As body fat increases, inflammation rises, leading to:
โข Insulin resistance
โข Elevated triglycerides
โข Increased risk for heart disease and certain cancers
โข Compromised immune function
โข Higher LDL (โbadโ) cholesterol and lower HDL (โgoodโ) cholesterol
โข More oxidative stress and cellular damage
โข Omega-3 imbalance from absorbing saturated fat stored in body tissue
โข Faster aging and fatigue
โข Memory and focus problems
โข Slower recovery from illness or infection
Fat tissue also sends out inflammatory chemicals called cytokines and lipokines that keep the immune system in constant overdrive. These signals should normally turn on to fight infection. Then, they should turn off again. However, in an overweight body, they stay on all the time. The immune system becomes tired and less effectiveโlike a flashlight left on low power until the battery dies.
Excess fat also raises LDL cholesterol because it is metabolically active tissue. It signals the liver to make more cholesterol and interferes with how the body processes fats. Inflammation caused by fat tissue leads to higher LDL, higher triglycerides, and lower HDL. Insulin resistance from extra belly fat makes it harder for the body to clear cholesterol from the bloodstream. Meanwhile, oxidative stress damages LDL particles, making them sticky and more likely to build up in artery walls. As you lose weight, when on a whole plant exclusive diet, you are burning off high saturated fat, so effectively you are still on a high saturated fat diet, from your own body. You are still not going see your cholesterol drop that low. If you kept the weight stable, and you didn’t lose, you wouldn’t be burning up the saturated fat on you. Your own fat is animal fat like fat from animal products. You still get the harmful effects of meat fat. Your cholesterol won’t drop as low until you reach the favorable body fat.
Dr. Fuhrman also points out that people who are overweight often have abnormal omega-3 levels. When your body burns stored fat, it releases the saturated fat trapped inside those cells. You then absorb more saturated fat from your own tissue, which interferes with omega-3 function. Since omega-3 fats are needed for brain, heart, and immune health, this imbalance creates even more inflammation and harm.
Your fat cells are a magnet for toxins. They are the garbage pail of your body. They hold on to things like mercury, toxic metals, fat soluble chemical compounds and pesticides. You can’t detox your body unless you eliminate the excess fat stored in the body. As you lose weight, your body breaks down fat, releasing toxic waste into the circulation. This is why some people feel a little fatigued when on this healthy lifestyle.
Even people who appear to be a normal weight can have hidden fat around their organs. This โnormal weight obesityโ still increases the risk for heart disease, diabetes, and early aging. Dr. Fuhrman emphasizes maintaining a lean yet healthy level of body fat through a nutrient-rich, whole plant exclusive diet. This approach helps lower inflammation, balance cholesterol, normalize omega-3 levels, and keep your immune system strong.
Fat is not just stored energyโit is an active organ that can hurt you. Eat exclusively whole plant foods. Keep your body lean. This can silence inflammation, protect your heart, and help your body heal and thrive.

Dr. Fuhrman notes that no healthy centenarians have such high BMIs like those recommendations in the BMI chart. ย Healthy centenarians have BMIs between 19 and 23. ย With an average BMI of about 21.
