Cook Lentils in The Microwave or Instant Pot

Greenings Green Warrior! Both the microwave and Instant Pot offer quick, hands-free ways to cook lentils with minimal effort. The microwave is ideal for small portions and quick meals, while the Instant Pot allows for batch cooking without needing to watch a pot on the stove.

How to Cook Lentils in the Microwave

What You Need

  • ยฝ cup dried lentils (green, brown, or red)
  • 1 ยฝ cups water or vegetable broth
  • A microwave-safe bowl
  • A Microwave Splatter Cover

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse the Lentils โ€“ Place the lentils in a fine-mesh strainer and rinse them under cold water to remove dirt and debris.
  2. Combine with Water โ€“ In a microwave-safe bowl, add the rinsed lentils and water (or vegetable broth for extra flavor). Use a deep bowl to prevent overflow.
  3. Cover the Bowl โ€“ Loosely place a Microwave Splatter Cover over the bowl to prevent splattering. Do not seal it tightly, as steam needs to escape.
  4. Microwave on High โ€“ Start by microwaving for 5 minutes. Carefully stir the lentils and continue cooking in 3-minute intervals until they reach your desired tenderness. Cooking times vary, but most lentils take about 12โ€“15 minutes.
  5. Check for Doneness โ€“ Lentils should be tender but not mushy. If they are too firm, add a little more water and continue cooking in 2-minute increments.
  6. Drain Excess Water โ€“ If there is extra liquid, drain it using a fine-mesh strainer.
  7. Season and Serve โ€“ Add your favorite seasonings. Use the lentils in soups, salads, grain bowls, or as a hearty side dish.

How to Cook Lentils in the Instant Pot

What You Need

  • 1 cup dried lentils (green, brown, or red)
  • 2 ยผ cups water or vegetable broth

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Rinse the Lentils โ€“ Just like with the microwave method, rinse the lentils under cold water to remove dirt and debris.
  2. Add Ingredients to the Instant Pot โ€“ Place the lentils and water (or broth) into the Instant Pot. Do not overfill, as lentils expand during cooking.
  3. Set Cooking Time โ€“ Secure the lid, set the valve to “Sealing,” and select the appropriate cooking time:
    • Green or Brown Lentils: 9 minutes on high pressure
    • Red Lentils: 5 minutes on high pressure (they cook faster and become soft, great for soups)
  4. Natural or Quick Release โ€“ Let the pressure release naturally for 10 minutes, then do a quick release by carefully turning the valve to “Venting.”
  5. Check Consistency โ€“ Open the lid, stir the lentils, and drain excess liquid if needed.
  6. Season and Serve โ€“ Add spices, or any seasonings you like. Use them in your favorite dishes or store for later use.
