Your spice rack may hold more than flavor.
Recent investigations have uncovered an unsettling truth. Some brightly colored powdered spices have been contaminated with a toxic industrial pigment called lead chromate, a chemical that was never meant to be in food. In some cases, it has contributed to lead poisoning, including the 2023 cinnamon applesauce recall that affected more than 500 children across 44 states.
The good news is that there is a simple, inexpensive step you can take to reduce your risk. It may cost as little as five dollars.
How Did Paint End Up in Spices?
Lead chromate is an industrial pigment that gives products a bright yellow color. It has been used in paints, plastics, and other manufactured goods.
Unfortunately, dishonest suppliers discovered that adding this pigment to powdered turmeric and other spices could make them appear more vibrant while also increasing their weight, allowing them to make more money.
The practice gained attention after severe flooding in Bangladesh during the 1980s damaged turmeric crops. Some producers reportedly began using lead chromate to restore the bright yellow appearance consumers expected. Over time, contaminated spices entered international supply chains.
Researchers, including scientists from Stanford University, eventually traced the source of this contamination, helping expose a food fraud that had gone unnoticed for years.
The 2023 Recall That Shocked Parents
In 2023, contaminated cinnamon used in certain applesauce pouches led to one of the largest lead related food recalls in recent U.S. history.
Products sold under the WanaBana brand and several store brands were found to contain dangerously high levels of lead. More than 500 children across dozens of states were affected.
Young children are especially vulnerable because lead can interfere with brain development, learning, and behavior. Even low levels of exposure can be harmful.
Fortunately, this recall involved specific products and should not cause consumers to avoid cinnamon altogether.
The Second Hidden Concern
Lead chromate contains two toxic substances.
The first is lead.
The second is hexavalent chromium, a form of chromium that became widely known through the work of environmental advocate Erin Brockovich.
While lead often receives the most attention, hexavalent chromium is also considered a serious health concern. Since lead chromate contains both compounds, contaminated spices may expose consumers to both contaminants.
Should You Stop Eating Turmeric or Cinnamon?
No.
Turmeric, cinnamon, paprika, chili powder, and other spices can all be part of a healthy diet.
The concern is not the spices themselves. The concern is contaminated powdered products from unreliable sources.
Most major U.S. brands have quality control systems in place, and contamination events remain relatively uncommon. Awareness and smart purchasing decisions are much more effective than fear.
The Simple $5 Solution
One of the easiest ways to reduce your risk is to purchase whole spices instead of pre ground powders.
Buy turmeric root instead of turmeric powder.
Buy cinnamon sticks instead of ground cinnamon. Ceylon is considered the best type of cinnamon.
Purchase whole cumin seeds, coriander seeds, peppercorns, and other whole spices whenever possible.
Then grind only what you need using an inexpensive coffee or spice grinder dedicated exclusively to spices. Many models cost around five to twenty dollars and can last for years.
Grinding your own spices also provides another benefit. Freshly ground spices often have a stronger aroma, richer flavor, and higher levels of beneficial plant compounds than pre ground versions that may have been sitting on store shelves for months.
Additional Tips for Safer Spice Shopping
When purchasing spices, consider these simple guidelines.
Choose reputable brands that perform heavy metal testing.
Look for companies that publish information about their quality standards.
USDA Organic certification can provide additional confidence, although it does not specifically guarantee heavy metal testing.
Products manufactured under recognized food safety certification programs, such as GFSI certified facilities, generally have stronger quality control systems.
Avoid purchasing unusually bright, vividly colored powdered spices from informal markets or unknown sources.
No Need to Panic
If you already have powdered spices in your kitchen, there is no reason to throw everything away.
Most spices sold through established U.S. retailers are safe. The goal is simply to make better purchasing decisions moving forward.
If you are concerned that a young child may have consumed a recalled product or may have been exposed to lead, contact your pediatrician to discuss whether a blood lead test is appropriate.
Knowledge Is Your Best Protection
Food safety has improved dramatically over the past century thanks to scientific research, stronger regulations, and increased consumer awareness. Investigations into contaminated spices have already helped identify problems, remove dangerous products from store shelves, and encourage better testing throughout the food industry.
The next time you shop, consider reaching for whole spices instead of powdered ones. That simple change may improve both the flavor of your meals and your peace of mind.
Small choices often make the biggest difference when it comes to protecting your family’s health.
