Alert: Hidden Danger in Your Spice Rack – Lead Contamination in Ground Cinnamon Revealed

Greenings, Green Warrior! Today, we’re diving into a concerning issue that affects our kitchen cabinets: lead contamination in ground cinnamon. Recent findings have revealed elevated levels of lead in several brands of ground cinnamon spice, prompting concerns about the safety of this commonly used ingredient in home cooking. Let’s unpack the details of this discovery and learn how we can protect ourselves and our families from potential exposure to this toxic metal.

The Contamination Concern

Six brands of ground cinnamon have been flagged for containing elevated levels of lead, although significantly lower than the levels detected in previous cases. There was a recent article about lead being found in the cinnamon in applesauce. The FDA recalled many of these applesauces. Last year, there was lead found in turmeric.

Often, lead is used in spices because it can brighten them and make them look more vibrant. Look at the FDA recall to remove those products from your homes.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a statement advising against prolonged exposure to these products, warning that they could contribute to elevated blood lead levels and pose health risks, especially to young children.

Brands Affected and Recommended Actions

The affected ground cinnamon products are sold under the names La Fiesta, Marcum, MK, Swad, Supreme Tradition, and El Chilar. On it’s website, the FDA has recommended consumers to refrain from eating, selling, or serving these products and has urged the respective companies to issue voluntary recalls. These products are commonly found at various retailers, including Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Patel Brothers, and Save A Lot.

Why Lead in Cinnamon?

Lead contamination in spices like cinnamon is not uncommon. It can occur due to absorption from soil during plant growth or through processing methods that involve the addition of lead as a coloring agent or to increase weight. While the concentrations found in the recent investigation are lower than in previous cases, any level of lead exposure is cause for concern, particularly for vulnerable populations like children.

Risks of Lead Exposure

Lead exposure, even at low levels, can have serious health implications, especially for young children. Prolonged exposure to lead can lead to neurological effects, learning disabilities, and lower IQ levels. Children are particularly susceptible to lead poisoning as they absorb more lead than adults and are more sensitive to its effects.

Call for Action

The FDA has called for increased vigilance and preventive measures to address lead contamination in spices and other food products. While the agency conducts testing and surveillance to identify contaminated products, manufacturers and importers are ultimately responsible for ensuring the safety of their products. The FDA has also urged Congress to mandate testing of ingredients or final products marketed for consumption by infants and young children to prevent lead exposure.

Conclusion: Stay Informed and Vigilant

In conclusion, Green Warrior, it’s essential to stay informed about potential food contaminants like lead and take proactive steps to safeguard our health and well-being. By being mindful of the products we consume and advocating for stricter regulations and testing protocols, we can help ensure the safety of our food supply and protect future generations from the harmful effects of lead exposure.

One effective strategy to mitigate the risk of lead contamination in ground cinnamon is to opt for whole cinnamon sticks and grind them yourself with a spice grinder at home. By purchasing whole cinnamon sticks, you have more control over the sourcing and processing of the spice, reducing the likelihood of exposure to contaminants like lead. Grinding cinnamon sticks at home ensures freshness and purity, as well as peace of mind knowing exactly what goes into your spice blend. Plus, the aroma and flavor of freshly ground cinnamon are unmatched, adding a delightful touch to your culinary creations. So, consider making the switch to whole cinnamon sticks for a safer and more flavorful spice experience.

I use Ceylon cinnamon sticks. One of the key benefits of Ceylon cinnamon lies in its low coumarin content compared to other varieties of cinnamon, such as Cassia cinnamon. Coumarin is a naturally occurring compound found in cinnamon that, in high doses, may pose health risks, including potential liver damage. Ceylon cinnamon, also known as “true cinnamon,” contains significantly lower levels of coumarin, making it a safer option for regular consumption. Additionally, Ceylon cinnamon is prized for its delicate flavor and aroma, making it a popular choice for culinary use and as a natural remedy for various health conditions.

I also try to use fresh whenever possible. I purchase fresh ginger root and turmeric root. I cut them into 1/4 inch pieces which I freeze. They thaw on the countertop quickly to be minced or blended.

I grind my many of my own spices including black pepper in this dual chamber pepper mill. I put mustard seeds in the other chamber as mustard increases the bioavailability of nutrients in cruciferous vegetables. Freshly ground spices have a wonderful aroma and fresher taste. After grinding your own Ceylon cinnamon sticks for that unbeatable freshness and flavor, it’s crucial to store the ground cinnamon properly to preserve its potency and aroma. Opt for an airtight container, such as a glass jar to keep moisture and air out.

As Nick Daveron from local spicery told me, storing cinnamon and other ground spices in an airtight container in a cool, dark place away from sunlight and heat helps preserve their flavor, aroma, and potency. Moisture, air, light, and heat can all contribute to the degradation of ground spices over time, leading to loss of flavor and aroma. Therefore, it’s essential to store freshly ground spices in a way that minimizes exposure to these factors to maintain their quality for as long as possible. Whether it’s cinnamon, cloves, cumin, or any other spice, following these storage guidelines can help ensure that your freshly ground spices retain their freshness and enhance the taste of your dishes (Thanks to Green Warrior Nina Krosch, for asking me about how I store my freshly ground cinnamon).
