Greenings Green Warriors! Exciting news, the United States House of Representatives has officially recognized the critical role that nutrition plays in combating disease. In a historic move, they passed H.Res.784, calling for physicians and health professionals to be trained in nutrition and how it impacts disease. This is a major step forward in prioritizing diet-related disease prevention and treatment in healthcare.
But wait, it gets even better! The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), one of the most respected mainstream medical journals, recently published a groundbreaking proposal. They are recommending mandatory nutrition education for doctors and medical students in 36 key areas of competency related to nutrition. This means that nutrition training could soon become a requirement for passing board certifications and obtaining a medical license. Can you imagine? Future doctors equipped with the knowledge and skills to guide patients toward healthier eating habits for disease prevention and treatment!
Here’s what the House Resolution states:
“H.Res.784 – Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the United States recognizes the mounting personal and financial burden of diet-related disease in the United States and calls on medical schools, graduate medical education programs, and other health professional training programs to provide meaningful physician and health professional education on nutrition and diet.”
This is HUGE news for anyone who has ever felt frustrated by the current healthcare system’s lack of focus on nutrition. For too long, we’ve relied on doctors to self-educate on this critical aspect of health, and many don’t receive formal nutrition training during their medical education. But with this resolution and JAMA’s proposal, we’re moving toward a future where nutrition becomes an integral part of medical practice.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “Will this really make a difference?” or perhaps you’re already predicting some disappointment. Here’s what I want to emphasize: this is a major win, and we must celebrate every step forward, no matter how small. Change takes time, but this is an important first step toward normalizing nutrition in healthcare.
To add even more excitement, the same House committee that introduced this resolution also requested that plant-based meals be served in government agencies. Yes, you heard that right—plant-based meals! It looks like they are reading the right research, and the shift towards recognizing the benefits of a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle is gaining traction. Even JAMA cited plant-based studies, like the recent twins study, in their recommendation article.
While it will take time to develop and implement these training programs, the future looks bright for nutrition in healthcare. We’re moving toward a new era where doctors will have the tools to help us not just manage, but reverse chronic diseases through proper nutrition.
So, let’s celebrate this huge win! This is just the beginning, and it’s a step toward a healthcare system that truly understands the power of what we eat.
