Greenings Green Warrior! The average American spends 93% of our life indoors. That’s 87% of our life is inside buildings and another six percent on average inside automobiles!
Most of us know that exposure to sunlight provides us with Vitamin D. Recent studies have shown that there is much more benefits to sunlight exposure. The sun has other health benefits as well.
In our modern society, many of us are deprived of the natural, healing rays of near infrared light. Spending most of our time indoors and shielded from the sun’s beneficial light can have detrimental effects on our health. The absence of near infrared light, combined with our exposure to high-energy photons from artificial light sources, contributes to oxidative stress and can weaken our immune system. This deficiency in natural light may also exacerbate existing health conditions, particularly in populations with high rates of diabetes and obesity.
Does light really penetrate into our body?
Try holding a flashlight against the palm of your hand. You can see the light penetrating into your skin, providing a tangible demonstration of infrared’s ability to interact with our bodies on a cellular level.
How Can I Harness The Power of Infrared Light?
One strategy is to ensure that our environment is conducive to receiving natural light. This may involve purging our indoor spaces of artificial light sources and allowing ample sunlight to filter in through windows and doors. While window screens may diminish the intensity of infrared light, they still allow some beneficial light to penetrate, making outdoor exposure worthwhile.
When it comes to artificial lighting, choosing LED bulbs that emit infrared light can provide some of the benefits of natural sunlight. While the efficacy of these bulbs is still being studied, they offer a promising avenue for supplementing our exposure to infrared light indoors.
Furthermore, optimizing our daily routines to align with natural light cycles can help regulate our circadian rhythm and promote overall well-being. Getting exposure to natural sunlight, particularly in the morning hours, can anchor our circadian rhythm and improve sleep quality. Conversely, minimizing exposure to artificial light, especially blue light, in the evening hours can signal to our bodies that it’s time to wind down and prepare for rest.
Do I Have to go Into the Direct Sunlight to Get The Beneficial Infrared Light?
It is not necessary to sit out in the direct sun to get the beneficial infrared light. You can sit in the shade as the infrared light from the sun will bounce off of the green leaves and grass and onto you! Even if you are wearing long sleeves and pants, the infrared light from the sun will penetrate those clothes and your skin!
What if it is Too Cold Outside or I Live In Extreme Latitudes?
For those living in extreme latitudes where daylight varies significantly throughout the year, adjusting indoor lighting and utilizing light therapy devices can help maintain a healthy circadian rhythm. By mimicking natural light patterns, we can mitigate the adverse effects of prolonged darkness or extended daylight exposure on our health.
Ultimately, incorporating strategies to maximize our exposure to natural and beneficial light, particularly near infrared light, can support our overall health and well-being. Whether it’s through spending time outdoors, optimizing indoor lighting, or utilizing light therapy devices, prioritizing our connection to light can have profound benefits for our physical and mental health.
Incorporate these tips into your daily routine to harness the power of infrared light and optimize your health in today’s modern world. By embracing the healing properties of natural light, we can enhance our resilience and thrive in an environment that nurtures our well-being.
Tell me in the comments if you are going to change your routine to incorporate exposure to infrared light.
