Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of white or brown rice
  • Water

Instructions:

For White Rice:
  1. Rinse the Rice:
    • Place 1 cup of white rice in a fine-mesh strainer or rice rinser and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove excess starch and prevents the rice from becoming too sticky.
  2. Measure the Water:
    • In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the rinsed rice with 1 ½ cups of water.
  3. Boil the Water:
    • Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil.
  4. Simmer the Rice:
    • Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 18 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during this time to ensure proper steam cooking.
  5. Rest and Fluff:
    • After 18 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 5 minutes. This allows the rice to finish cooking with residual steam.
    • Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork before serving.
For Brown Rice:
  1. Rinse the Rice:
    • Place 1 cup of brown rice in a fine-mesh strainer or rice rinser and rinse under cold water until the water runs clear. This helps to remove any dust or debris.
  2. Measure the Water:
    • In a medium-sized saucepan, combine the rinsed rice with 2 cups of water.
  3. Boil the Water:
    • Place the saucepan over medium-high heat and bring the water to a boil.
  4. Simmer the Rice:
    • Once the water is boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the saucepan with a tight-fitting lid, and let it simmer for about 45 minutes. Avoid lifting the lid during this time to ensure proper steam cooking.
  5. Rest and Fluff:
    • After 45 minutes, remove the saucepan from the heat and let it sit, covered, for an additional 10 minutes. This allows the rice to finish cooking with residual steam.
    • Remove the lid and fluff the rice with a fork before serving.

Tips for Perfect Rice:

  • Use the Right Ratio: The key to perfectly cooked rice is using the correct water-to-rice ratio. For white rice, use 1 ½ cups of water for every cup of rice. For brown rice, use 2 cups of water for every cup of rice.
  • Keep the Lid On: Avoid lifting the lid during the simmering and resting periods. This ensures that the rice cooks evenly and absorbs all the water.
  • Fluffing the Rice: Use a fork to fluff the rice after it’s done resting. This separates the grains and prevents the rice from becoming mushy.

Cooking rice on the stove is a simple process that yields delicious results. Whether you’re making white or brown rice, these steps will help you achieve perfectly cooked rice every time. Enjoy your meal!
