Plant-Powered Gatherings: Engaging Activities for Whole Food Plant-Based Events

Hosting a whole food, plant-based gathering is a fantastic way to connect with like-minded individuals, share delicious food, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

Here are some ideas for activities to engage attendees and make your event memorable:

Cooking Demonstrations: Invite a guest chef or experienced home cook to demonstrate plant-based cooking techniques and share their favorite recipes. Attendees can learn new skills, ask questions, and sample the dishes.

Here is an example of a cooking demo at one of our meetings:

Recipe Swap:

Encourage attendees to bring copies of their favorite whole food plant-based recipes to share with others. Create a recipe exchange station where guests can browse through the recipes, take photos, and jot down ideas. Need ideas for recipes?

Tasting Stations:

Set up tasting stations featuring different plant-based foods and ingredients. Include samples of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, and plant-based dairy alternatives. Provide tasting cards for guests to rate their favorites and take notes.

Nutrition Workshops:

Host interactive workshops or presentations led by nutrition experts or health coaches. Topics could include the benefits of a plant-based diet, how to meet nutrient needs on a plant-based diet, and tips for transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle. You can also do this via Zoom. I have presented to many plant based gatherings via zoom. If you are interested in having me tell my plant based story via Zoom at one of your gatherings, click here to contact me.

Group Exercise Sessions:

Offer group exercise sessions to get attendees moving and energized. Options could include yoga classes, guided nature walks, dance workouts, or outdoor fitness challenges. Encourage participants to wear comfortable clothing and bring yoga mats or towels.

Panel Discussions:

Organize panel discussions or Q&A sessions with a diverse group of speakers, including plant-based physicians, dietitians, chefs, and lifestyle bloggers. Topics could range from plant-based nutrition and sustainable eating to personal success stories and overcoming challenges.

Farmers Market Tour:

Coordinate a visit to a local farmers market where attendees can explore fresh produce, chat with farmers, and learn about seasonal eating. Encourage participants to shop for ingredients to use in their own plant-based meals.

Interactive Workshops:

Offer hands-on workshops or activities focused on specific aspects of plant-based living. Examples include meal planning and batch cooking sessions, gardening workshops, fermenting and sprouting demonstrations, and DIY plant-based pantry staples. At one of my meetings I led a frushi making workshop where all participants made their own frushi. Click here for the instructions on how to make frushi.

Recipe Contests:

Host a friendly recipe contest where attendees can showcase their culinary creativity. Set categories like appetizers, main dishes, desserts, and beverages, and invite guests to submit their best plant-based recipes for judging. Offer prizes for the winners.

Community Building Activities:

Facilitate opportunities for attendees to connect and socialize with one another. Provide designated networking areas, icebreaker games, and group discussions on shared interests related to plant-based living.

My Whole Food Plant Based Journey:

Ask some attendees to stand up and briefly introduce themselves telling how they discovered the lifestyle and why they chose to embrace it. Additionally, they may include if they had any benefits like improved health or weight loss. When we do this at our meetings, we all chant “Hello, (name of person)”.

Introduce the Newbies:

At each meeting, we invite the newcomers to stand up in front of the group. They state their name, where they are from, whom (if anyone) they brought with them, how they found out about the group/lifestyle. When we do this at our meetings, we all chant “Hello, (name of person)”. After all of the introductions, we give a round of applause to the newbies.

You Can Also Try These Icebreaker Games and Group Discussions:

  1. Icebreaker Games:
    • “Two Truths and a Lie”: Attendees take turns sharing two truths and one lie about themselves related to their plant-based journey. Others guess which statement is the lie.
    • “Plant-Based Bingo”: Create bingo cards with various plant-based foods or lifestyle habits. Attendees mingle and find others who can mark off a square on their card based on shared experiences or preferences.
    • “Name That Veggie”: Show pictures of different vegetables and fruits on a screen. Attendees try to guess the names of the items, sparking conversation about favorite recipes or cooking methods.
  2. Group Discussions:
    • “Favorite Plant-Based Recipes”: Attendees share their go-to plant-based recipes, discussing ingredients, preparation methods, and personal tips for making them.
    • “Dining Out Tips”: Participants exchange strategies for eating plant-based when dining out, recommending vegan-friendly restaurants, and navigating menus.
    • “Health Benefits and Personal Experiences”: Attendees discuss the health benefits they’ve experienced since adopting a plant-based diet, such as improved energy levels, weight loss, or better digestion. They also share any challenges they’ve faced and how they’ve overcome them.
    • “Environmental Impact of Plant-Based Living”: Delve into the environmental benefits of plant-based eating, such as reduced carbon footprint and conservation of resources. Discuss ways to promote sustainability through food choices and lifestyle habits.
    • “Plant-Based Living on a Budget”: Share money-saving tips and budget-friendly meal ideas for maintaining a plant-based diet without breaking the bank. Participants can swap thrifty shopping strategies and cost-effective recipes.
    • Nutrition Facts: Create cards or a slide show with pictures of different fruits or vegetable. Put 4 on each card/slide. Ask questions like “Which one has the most calories, selenium, vitamin C, potassium, etc.?

By incorporating these engaging activities into your whole food plant-based gathering, you can create a fun and enriching experience for attendees while promoting the benefits of a plant-powered lifestyle.
