Quick and Easy Whole Food Plant-Based, SOS-Free Tomato Sauce Ingredients

Quick and Easy Whole Food Plant-Based, SOS-Free Tomato Sauce Instructions

  1. In a large pot, add a splash of vegetable broth or water. Sauté the chopped onion over medium heat until it becomes translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  2. Pour in the canned crushed tomatoes. Add the dried oregano, basil, thyme, and red pepper flakes if using. Stir well to combine.
  3. Add 1/2 cup of vegetable broth or water to the pot and bring the sauce to a gentle simmer. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a bit more vegetable broth or water.
  4. If you prefer a smoother sauce, use an immersion blender to blend the sauce to your desired consistency. You can skip this step if you like a chunkier sauce.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning with freshly ground black pepper. Since this is an SOS-free recipe, no additional salt is added, but the flavors of the tomatoes and herbs should make for a delicious sauce.
  6. Serve the tomato sauce over your favorite whole grain pasta, use it as a pizza sauce, or as a base for soups and stews. Garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
