Greenings Green Warrior!! Navigating restaurant menus can be tricky when you’re committed to a whole food, plant-based lifestyle, but with these tips, you can enjoy dining out without compromising your health goals. Here are some strategies to help you make the best choices:
Key Items to Look For:
- Simple Staples: Opt for plain (no butter, salt, sour cream, etc.) baked potatoes or sweet potatoes, brown rice, steamed (no oil or butter) vegetables, salads (no cheese, croutons or dressing).
- Mix and Match: Create a meal from ingredients in appetizers and side dishes to keep it varied and interesting.
- Flavor Boosters: Enhance your meals with healthy sauces such as balsamic vinegar (not vinaigrette which has added sugar) lemon and lime juice. You can even bring your own homemade sauces!
Pro Tips:
- Be Oil Aware: Many restaurants add oil, even to steamed vegetables, along with sugar and salt. Always check with the manager to be sure.
- Indian Cuisine Caution: Indian restaurants often use ghee (clarified butter) in their recipes, and may not distinguish between vegetarian and vegan dishes. Call ahead, check the online menu, and confirm with your server to ensure no ghee, yogurt, milk, or cheese is used.
As of the writing of this blog, Wendi’s serves apple bites & plain, baked potatoes. You can request the potatoes plain without butter or salt!
