Say Goodbye to Mosquito Bites: Natural Remedies and Innovative Solutions

Greenings Green Warrior! Do you dread mosquitos and their itchy bites? I am exceptionally susceptible to getting extremely itchy from mosquito bites! For me, bites have turned into uncomfortable, itchy welts which last over a week. After much research, I have found the perfect solutions for me that actually work!

Mosquitoes are not only annoying but can also transmit diseases. Fortunately, there are natural ways to keep mosquitoes at bay and effective remedies to soothe those itchy bites. In this blog, we’ll explore some tried-and-true methods, including three amazing ones that actually worked for me! They are unusual yet effective tools and one is an innovative invention from a Shark Tank contestant. If the following remedies don’t work for you, scroll down for the ones that I won’t live without and for which you can thank me later, lol!

Natural Ways to Repel Mosquitoes

  1. Essential Oils: Many essential oils have mosquito-repelling properties. Oils like citronella, eucalyptus, lavender, and neem are known for their effectiveness. You can mix a few drops of these oils with a carrier oil (like coconut or jojoba) and apply it to your skin. For a more straightforward approach, you can also use a diffuser to spread these oils in your living space (If you have pets be sure to research if any of these oils can be harmful to them.).
  2. Herbal Plants: Planting herbs like basil, mint, and rosemary around your home can deter mosquitoes. Their strong scents are natural repellents. Consider keeping pots of these herbs on your patio or windowsill with an herb garden kit.
  3. Garlic and Vinegar: Both garlic and vinegar have natural repelling qualities. You can create a DIY repellent by mixing garlic juice or crushed garlic with water. Similarly, apple cider vinegar can be used as a spray or applied to the skin. Just be cautious with these methods, as they might have a strong smell.
  4. Lemon and Eucalyptus: A mixture of lemon and eucalyptus oil can be highly effective against mosquitoes. Combine a few drops of each with a carrier oil and apply it to exposed skin. This combo not only repels mosquitoes but also leaves a refreshing scent (If you have pets be sure to research if any of these oils can be harmful to them.).
  5. Wearing Light-Colored Clothing: Mosquitoes are attracted to dark colors. Wearing light-colored, loose-fitting clothing can make you less attractive to these pests.

Soothe the Itch with Natural Remedies

  1. Aloe Vera: Known for its soothing properties, aloe vera gel can calm the itch and reduce inflammation. Apply a small amount directly to the bite for immediate relief.
  2. Baking Soda Paste: Mix baking soda with a bit of water to create a paste. Apply this paste to the bite, and let it sit for about 10 minutes. Baking soda helps neutralize the itchiness and reduce swelling.
  3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress or ice pack can numb the area and reduce swelling. Wrap the ice in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.
  4. Oatmeal: An oatmeal paste can relieve itching and irritation. Mix oats with water to form a paste, apply it to the bite, and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing off.
  5. Itch Eraser. This has baking soda, tea tree oil and aloe.
  6. Avon Skin So Soft Lotion This can be used to repel mosquitoes. It doesn’t always work for me to repel them, but it has been helpful to me to temporarily soothe the itch. I once was bombarded my multiple mosquito bites, yikes! A friend gave me Avon Skin So Soft Lotion and I immediately applied it all over my legs. It temporarily soothed the itch. I use Avon Skin So Soft Lotion when I get multiple bites and can’t use my tried and true solutions (which follow) fast enough as I need to treat a large area for temporary relief. This buys me time to later, treat each bite individually as described below. Scroll down for what I finally found that works for me! Yay!
  7. Dawn Dish Soap, a washcloth or scrub brush and hot (not burning hot) water. If it is possible, after being bitten by a mosquito, I get a a washcloth or preferably a scrub brush and clean the area thoroughly with Dawn Dish Soap and very, very warm water. I keep scrubbing, rinsing and scrubbing until the itch is gone. This method works best if it is done immediately after the bite(s). I keep this soap dispensing scrub brush with handle, filled with Dawn Dish Soap by the sink and one in the shower so it is ready to go. The handle helps me to reach places like my back.

Innovative Solutions: Shark Tank Invention, Pimple Suction Machine and Electronic Bug Bite Healer !

1. The Mosquito Bite Relief Device from Shark Tank

BUG BITE THING Suction Tool – Bug Bites and Bee/Wasp Stings, Natural Insect Bite Relief.

The BUG BITE THING Suction Tool actually works for me. It sometimes takes a minute or two of consistent suction, but it works. It works best immediately after being bitten by a mosquito. After using it, the bite no longer itches, yay!

The BUG BITE THING Suction Tool can be awkward to use on places like your back unless you are with someone who is willing to reach that spot for you.

2. The Pimple Suction Machine

You might be surprised to learn that a tool typically used for acne treatment (why not go plant based, right?) can also be effective for mosquito bites. Pimple suction machines are designed to remove impurities from the skin. When used on mosquito bites, they can help reduce swelling and extract any trapped fluids, which may alleviate itching and promote faster healing. It works for me! I carry one of these whenever I leave the house. I also have another one at home. Here’s how to use it:

3. Electronic Bug Bite Healer I purchased this and wow, it really works!
